About
I am a 30-something husband and father living just outside of Seattle, Washington USA. By day I’m the director for marketing and new partner development at an online community that operates on a social enterprise model. By night, Super Dad, or at least so I like to claim when my wife isn’t around to laugh. This blog reflects a blend of all that.
I blogged for 3-odd years at SeattleDuck.com however I retired that domain recently. You can always peruse the archives.
The General Stuff
The Schools: University of Oregon, BS in History and Business, and University of Washington, MBA/Tech Mgmt.
The Career: Currently the Director of Marketing at WebJunction.org, an online community for library staff wrapped around good content and training. We consider WebJunction a social enterprise - meaning I am on the hook for driving sales/revenue to keep us self-sustaining as well as helping build a brand and vibrant community in service to the social mission. Cool stuff and a wild change from years past.
Previously: Microsoft (1998-2007, with a short break), all marketing, with stints on server clustering, developer tools, academic, community, and recently Windows Live where I drove efforts to work with tech bloggers as part of the PR team. In the past I’ve worked for Edifecs, Valence Research, Tactica, and even a place called Super Software (cape sold separately).
Things I like doing all the time: Playing with my beautiful daughter daughters (got three of them now!), laughing with my wife, hacking at photography, writing here and there, reading the Economist on a weekend, watching the Ducks play, screaming at my fantasy football teams, marveling at my iPhone, squeezing in some online gaming, making endless small modifications to the house, geeking out with Web sites, blogs, RSS, and so on.
Things I want to do more: Running, skiing, SCUBA (certified cold, but I’m a warm water fan), hiking - anything that gives me an excuse to claim “I need more gear from REI!” Basically all the outdoors stuff is getting less attention than I would like unfortunately.
Random Facts
I grew up in Sunnyvale, CA as an Apple loyalist (Steve Jobs and Woz both graduated from my high school, so loving the now-quaint rainbow logo was seemingly required by city ordnance). I owned nearly every version of the Apple II (God love Lode Runner!) and Mac from 1983 until 1998 - when I got a job working on the Windows team and figured it would be appropriate to own a computer that actually ran it. However since leaving Microsoft in 2007 I’ve got the Apple religion back, to the point of basically being a certified Apple fanboy. iPhone, MacBook Pro’s at home and (soon) work, and even - seriously - an original AppleTV which my family uses religiously. If ever given a choice, you’ll find me on a Mac.
I am not this guy. He plays guitar and sells lots of music. I have no musical talent. Unfortunately he got the better domain before I did.
About this blog
kevinbriody.net is built using Wordpress and now I’m giving the Thesis theme a try. I seriously can’t leave well enough along when it comes to blog themes. The last two iterations of this site ran my own heavily modified variaton on the default “Kubrick” theme, which I coined “Wheaton Scores”, and a styling of K2 which I called “Mallard Red”. My tools and toys of choice include Mac OSX, Coda, ImageWell, Cyberduck, and Photoshop CS3. Visit this page for a list of all active plugins used on this site.
